🏡 Property and the Republic:
Why Homeownership Still Matters

By Verity Group | Real Estate for Real Life

As we approach the Fourth of July and reflect on the birth of our nation, it’s worth remembering that the right to own property was one of the foundational freedoms our country was built upon. To the founders, property ownership wasn’t just about land or wealth—it was about freedom. They saw it as essential to a self-governing republic, where citizens could think independently, act boldly, and resist tyranny. Without the ability to own and protect property, they believed, liberty itself was at risk.

In fact, much of our early political philosophy rested on this one foundational idea: that individuals must have the right to acquire, control, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Property gave people a stake in their communities and the confidence to engage in public life as free men and women—not subjects.

📜 A Glimpse Back in Time
In the early years of the United States, many states required men to own property in order to vote. This wasn’t just about economics—it reflected a belief that those with land had both the independence and responsibility to help govern. While voting rights have (thankfully) expanded since then, the idea that ownership brings influence is still etched into the American story.

That vision still holds true today. While the market may have changed, the significance of homeownership hasn’t. It remains one of the most powerful ways to build personal freedom, generational wealth, and a voice in the community.
