Happy Birthday, United States Air Force!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, UNITED STATES AIR FORCE!
74 years ago on September 18, 1947, the United States Air Force was established as a separate branch of the military service. Naturally, the Air Force birthday owes a great appreciation to Orville and Wright who pioneered mechanized flight with their successful mission in 1903. In 1947, Army Air Bases were all re-designated as Air Force bases. With the re-designated bases also came new uniforms, insignia, and command structures that were all rolled out to recognize the specialized training and experience of Air Force pilots and commanders.
The Air Force Birthday is not a national holiday, however military members observe the occasion with events and activities in local communities, in individual units and squadrons, and most notably with the Air Force Ball. The traditions of the ball honor the same concepts as the Air Force birthday: the creation of airpower, the fellowship of airmen across the service, and the future of the force. Today, the United States Air Force has over 300,000 active duty members.
Five fun facts about the Air Force:
The Air Force tracks Santa.
An Airman was the first to break the sound barrier.
The Air Force shares its Birthday with the CIA.
The letters of the beginning of the names of Air Force aircraft translate the type of the plane (B for Bomber, C for Cargo, and F for fighter).
Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush both served in the Air Force.
